Course Description
- This course provides an introduction to the history of American culture. Our project will be to examine the creation of meaning in American history from colonial to contemporary times. Of course, that is an enormous field of study, and impossible to “cover” in one semester. The good news for all of us is that I won’t be trying to do that. Rather, we’ll focus on several themes, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and popular music.

Keyword Project
This semester-long collaborative project gives students a thread to follow through the course material. It comprises three major tasks:
- Tracking a keyword through the assigned material and class meetings every week
- Revising a dictionary entry on that keyword
- Writing a keyword essay about the role of that keyword in this course
The tracking component takes place on Blackboard; the other two occur here in the Keyword Collaboratories.
Please note: Anyone is welcome to look at these pages, and to comment using the "discussion" link. However, only members of a working group should actually edit their page. The whole collaboratory structure depends on respect for this rule.
